The Bauchi State Government has commenced moves to reposition sports through grassroots talent identification, improved facilities and stronger collaboration with stakeholders.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Bashir Ya’u, disclosed this while receiving members of the Sport Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Bauchi State chapter, who paid him a courtesy visit.
Ya’u revealed that the government was planning to establish a modern Sports Academy that would combine sporting development with quality education for young athletes.
He said the academy would provide an avenue for discovering promising talents in various sporting disciplines and equipping them with the skills needed to compete at higher levels.
The Commissioner said the ministry was ready to work closely with SWAN and other stakeholders to revive sporting activities and create opportunities for young people in the state.
He thanked the sports writers for their visit and assured them of continued partnership in advancing sports development.
Speaking earlier, SWAN Chairman, Bala Bawaji, congratulated the commissioner on his appointment and said the visit was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the association and the ministry.
Bawaji urged the ministry to pay greater attention to sporting facilities, saying improved infrastructure would encourage more young people to participate in sports.
He also called on the commissioner to deploy his experience in public affairs and youthful energy towards addressing challenges affecting youth and sports development in the state.
Bawaji commended Governor Bala Mohammed for supporting sports, particularly through funding for Wikki Tourists and the State Sports Council to facilitate their participation in competitions across Nigeria.
